Speicherstadt

The centre of traditional Hamburg trade.

The Speicherstadt warehouse district is located between the Zollkanal canal and Sandtorhafen harbour. It was built between 1883 and 1927. The city council decided to construct a warehouse complex in this area. This decision was made because the area was duty-free at the time, and so the so-called free port was created there. It was dissolved in 2013. You can get interesting insights from the water with a harbour tour, during which the ship sails through the Kehrwiederfleet, for example.

There are many other attractions in the Speicherstadt, such as the Hamburg Dungeon, where gruesome events in Hamburg’s history are depicted in a ghost train ride. It is also home to Miniatur Wunderland, the world’s largest miniature railway. There is a spice museum and many other interesting places.

In 2015, the Speicherstadt and the Kontorhaus district with the Chilehaus were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
