Elbphilharmonie
Aural wonder on the Elbe
Hamburg’s architectural sensation
The Elbphilharmonie opened in January 2017 and since then the ‘Elphi’ has been a venue in a class of its own. It has something for music lovers of all genres: whether classical, jazz or other styles, it’s always worth a visit.
This impressive architectural masterpiece is located in the new HafenCity district, right on the waterfront. The design is by architects Herzog & de Meuron: a glass, curved roof landscape with a height of 110 metres was placed on top of Kaispeicher A, a brick building formerly used as a cocoa, tobacco and tea warehouse. It is precisely this contrast between history and modernity that gives the Elbphilharmonie its very special charm.
The large concert hall, with a height of 50 metres, is extraordinary and can seat up to 2,200 spectators. Two smaller halls with 550 and 170 seats respectively were also built. The panoramic view from the foyers of the Elbphilharmonie of the modern HafenCity, the harbour and Hamburg is uniquely beautiful.
Our insider tip:
